The relaxed and intelligent Orangutan (man of the forest) still survives on Borneo and Sumatra but it's habitat is damaged by logging and the human population explosion and it's future seems bleak.

Animals to see in Indonesia
Indonesia in most places is lush and with enough rainfall so several crops a year are often possible,and the greenery gives an impression of abundance.
Some parts are drier though and poorer
but these are the exception.
Tropical fruits abound in Indonesia, such as mangosteen, starfruit,papaya and Durian. Try to wash them though in boiled water, and only ever drink boiled water, even clean your teeth in boiled water.
Hygiene is quite literally a foreign concept in Asia and you cannot trust even a five star restaurant really if the truth be told.
The botanic gardens in Bogor near Jakarta are famous and well kept and worth a visit. Originally started by the Dutch they came to serve a similar purpose to Kew gardens in London, developing plants for agriculture around the empire.
Animals in Indonesia include orang-utans in Sumatra, water buffaloes in many places, Komodo dragons (giant lizards) on Komodo island and lots and lots of dogs who never stop barking as you walk past their houses.
In Jakarta in Ancol at the giant funpark Taman Mini there is a nice dolphin show which is worth watching, complete with pretty girls using scuba equipment to swim with the dolphins in a giant tank.
There are some animal reserves, but the wildlife and forests were under threat fifty years ago and now are in a much declined state. Logging has greatly damaged the chances of the bigger animals to survive.
The Balinese tiger died out decades ago as did the Javan tiger and the Sumatran tiger is on the edge of extinction. The rhino hangs on by a thread on Java and is very rare now in Sumatra. The elephant is likewise on the edge due to land clearing and poaching.
In the Sangeh monkey forest on Bali you can have your lunch stolen by the monkeys and they may even urinate on you for good measure but the monkey forest is still well worth visiting.
There are zoos in Jakarta and Surabaja and a few other places such as Batu near Malang in East Java.
Taman Safari near Bandung also is a zoo, more of a safari park concept than the others.
In general zoos in Indonesia have had a lot of criticism about their treatment of the animals and the lack of an educational emphasis for the public but there are now some signs of improvement.
There are over 40 Primate species in Indonesia, many now endangered. Many species play a crucial role in spreading seeds around the forest.
If we cannot even ensure the survival of our closest relatives then maybe we cannot ensure our own survival either.
